Motherboard component
1. Expansion slots (PCI Express, PCI and AGP)
• A connection or port located inside a computer on the motherboard or riser card.
2. 3-pin case fan connectors
• Help bring cool air into and blow hot air out of the case.
3. Back pane connectors
4. Heat sink
• A device that incorporates either a fan or some other component such as a processor, cooled down.
5. 4-pin (P4) power connectors
• A 12V power supply cable used with motherboards that have an Intel Pentium 4 or later processor.
6. Inductor
7. Capacitor
• A component made of two or sets of two conductive plates with a thin insulator between them and wrapped in a ceramic and plastic container.
8. CPU socket
• A connection that allows a computer processor to be connected to a motherboard.
9. Northbridge
• Northbridge is an integrated circuit responsible for communications between the CPU interface, AGP and the memory.
10. Screw hole
• Sometimes referred to as a standoff and spacer, standouts are small metal or plastic screw that attaches to a computer case and holds the motherboard to the case.
11. Memory slots
• Allows RAM( computer memory) to be inserted into the computer.
12. Super I/O
• Short for super input/output or super I/O, SIO is an integrated circuit on a computer motherboard that handles the slower and less prominent input/output devices.
13. Floppy connection
• A ribbon cable found in PC’s that allow one or more floppy disk drives to be connected to a computer.
14. ATA / IDE disk drive primary connection
15. 24-pin ATX power supply connector
• An ATX style connector is a replacement for the older P8 and P9 AT style connector. It is one of the largest connectors inside a computer.
16. Serial ATA connections
17. Coin cell battery (CMOS backup battery)
18. RAID
• Short for redundant array of independent disks, RAID is an assortment of hard drives connected and set up in ways to help protect or speed up the performance of a computer disk storage.
19. System panel connectors
• The system panel connector controls a computer power button, reset button and LED’s.
20. FWH
• Short for firmware hub, FWH is part of the Intel Accelerated Hub Architecture that contains both the system BIOS and integrated video BIOS on one component.
21. Southbridge
• Southbridge is an IC on the motherboard responsible for the hard drive controller hardware.
22. Serial port connector
• An asynchronous port on the computer used to connect a serial device to the computer and capable of transmitting one bit at a time.
• The serial port is found on the back of the computer.
23. USB headers
24. Jumpers
• Jumpers allow the computer to close an electrical circuit, allowing the electricity to flow certain sections of the circuit board.
• Jumper consist of a set of small pins that can be covered with a small plastic box (jumper block).
25. Integrated circuit
• The IC is a package containing many circuits, logic gates, pathways, transistors and other component all working together to perform a particular function or a series of functions.
26. 1394 headers
27. SPDIF
28. CD-IN
